Banin Charity Association Announces Withdrawal from Equipping and Managing the Displaced Persons Shelter at the Sports City, Rejecting Involvement in Political Divisions
Beirut: On the fifth of March 2026, a meeting was held bringing together Lebanese Prime Minister Dr. Nawaf Salam and Beirut Governor Judge Marwan Abboud, alongside the Secretary General of the Banin Charity Association, Mr. Jad Beydoun. During the meeting, the Banin Charity Association was tasked with equipping and managing a shelter center that was to be established at the Sports City stadium in Beirut to receive families displaced from their homes as a result of the ongoing war in Lebanon.
According to what was agreed upon during the meeting, the Association was expected to complete the preparation of the stadium and convert it into a fully equipped shelter center within no more than 48 hours, allowing for the reception of displaced persons and securing their basic needs under the emergency circumstances.
The Association commenced the necessary logistical and administrative preparations to carry out the task in coordination with the relevant authorities. However, two days after the meeting, developments arose in the form of complications involving one of the ministries within the government, which led to difficulties that prevented the continuation of work according to the agreed-upon mechanism.
In light of this, the Banin Charity Association announced its withdrawal from the task of equipping and managing the displaced persons shelter at the Sports City, affirming that its decision stemmed from its rejection of involvement in political divisions and rivalries in Lebanon, and its commitment to its independent humanitarian role.
The Association nevertheless affirmed its continued commitment to its humanitarian duty, currently operating the largest active displaced persons shelter at the Lycée Abdel Kader school, housing more than 1,350 displaced persons, in addition to the continued operation of the Banin Medical Center for primary healthcare, which opens its doors to our displaced people to provide them with free medical services.
The Association also continues to provide numerous humanitarian and relief services aimed at assisting our affected people across the Lebanese territory of 10,452 square kilometers.
Since its founding, Banin Charity Association has forged meaningful partnerships with international organizations to amplify its humanitarian impact across Lebanon. Notably, Wish Foundation Australia (since 2020) and Amity Foundation Dearborn (since 2024), have become strategic partners, providing critical support for Banin’s nine core programs and emergency relief initiatives. Their contributions are instrumental in ensuring Banin can meet the growing needs of the community, particularly through the Crisis Management Team (CMT), which has been pivotal during the current crisis.
